The two companies signed an MOU to partner on product marketing and distribution.

NuRAN Wireless Inc. (NUR:CSE; NRRWF:OTC; 1RN:FSE) recently announced that it has signed an Memorandum of Understanding with Avanti Communications Group for the marketing and distribution of a combined 2G RAN product alongside Avanti's Ka-band satellite backhaul solution.

"NuRAN Wireless and Avanti have a shared vision of connecting the unconnected. Beginning in East Africa, we see this as the start of a very successful and long-term partnership. Avanti's satellites provide ubiquitous coverage over countries of Sub Saharan Africa, making it the ideal solution for large-scale cellular backhaul deployments," said Bradley Shaw, NuRAN's regional manager for the Middle East and Africa.

Avanti Communications provides satellite broadband services across Europe, the Middle East and Africa through its fleet of High Throughput Satellites. The group has invested $1.2 billion in a network that incorporates satellites, Gateway Earth Stations, data centers and an international fiber ring.

A pilot for an East African operator will be the first project for the partnership. This operator can scale in order to make large deployments spanning the region and additional ones may be made throughout 2018 and into the first half of 2019.

For both NuRAN and Avanti connecting with rural communities is highly strategic. Satellite backhaul is often required for connecting with these communities and sometimes is the only viable solution, a fact that the two companies say highlights the strategic advantage of the collaboration.

"Avanti's Ka-band satellite backhaul services, combined with NuRAN Wireless' small cell technology provides a sustainable solution to extend mobile networks to rural and remote areas across Africa. Bringing internet services into these areas bridges the digital divide, thus, enables community members to become digital citizens," explained Christian Georgeson, chief marketing officer for Avanti Communications.
