The end of Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan's term in office moved a step closer Tuesday as a landmark bill to promote renewable energy in the wake of the March 11 disasters passed through the lower house of parliament.

The energy bill is meant to reduce Japan's reliance on nuclear power following the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex. The bill also aims to reduce Japan's greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2020 from the 1990 level, an international pledge the DPJ-led government still stands by, Industry Minister Banri Kaieda said. . .View full article
