The Philippine province of South Cotabato banned open-pit mining 12 months ago, but an environmental impact study (EIS) by Copper/gold developer Indophil Resources may prompt policy review.
Indophil Chairperson Brian Phillips said at the annual general meeting on Wednesday that the push to ban open-pit mining in South Cotabato was more politically motivated by anti-development interest than by environmental concerns.
He added that the national Philippine government had assured the company that the ban was contrary to national law, but that it was viewed as local politics that needed to be resolved.
