In the opening minutes of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average is up 56 points, or 0.5%, to 12,226.

The Standard and Poor's 500 index is up 6 points, or 0.5%, to 1,327. The Nasdaq composite is up 8 points, or 0.3%, to 2,792.
