Royal Mounties Search for Nearly $2M in Gold Bars

"An attempt was made on Valentine's Day to sell the gold bars in Toronto."

It's not quite pirate gold, but Toronto police say they're looking for nearly $2 million in gold bars that were bought with a "fraudulently obtained" bank draft in Montreal.

Police say the 10-ounce gold bars—of which there are 75—were purchased with a money draft for $1,895,751 early last month.

Manufactured by the Perth Mint in Australia, the bars bear the mint's symbol, which includes an image of Australia on the front with kangaroos on the back.

Police said an attempt was made on Valentine's Day to sell the gold bars in Toronto.

"Further attempts to sell these fraudulently obtained gold bars may be made in the future," police said in a news release.

They warned those working in the jewelry and metal industries to be on the lookout for anyone trying to unload the gold.

Further details of where the bars were purchased, or about the bank draft, were not offered in the news release.

The Canadian Bankers Association is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for any information that leads to the arrest, conviction and recovery of the gold bars.
