AAA_Meta Materials' Board of Award-Winning Experts Drive Sustainability for the Lux Innovator of the Year Award Winner

Nova Scotia-based Meta Materials Inc. today confirmed its acquisition of Nanotech Security Corp. and yesterday announced that META has been selected a Lux Innovator of the Year Award winner as part of the Lux Executive Summit 2021, Putting Sustainability at the Heart of Innovation. META’s winning submission was based on its work to develop a transparent, flexible radio-wave reflection film to improve performance of 5G networks.

What once was just thought of by most as fodder for sci-fi films, today’s nanotechnology makes the case for its real-life applications, allowing for the engineering and development of the kinds of products that were previously not attainable.

One player in this scene, Meta Materials Inc. (MMAT:NASDAQ; MMAX:CSE; 1T01:FRA) is a Halifax, Nova Scotia-based developer of high-
performance functional materials and nanocomposites.

META, as the company is known, today announced that they've completed their acquisition of Nanotech Security Corp. (TSXV:NTS; OTCQX:NTSFF) in an all-cash transaction at CA$1.25 per Nanotech common share, for a total value of approximately CA$90.9 million on a fully-diluted basis.    

Meanwhile, they announced yesterday that they had won a Lux Innovator of the Year Award winner for their work to develop a transparent, flexible radio-wave reflection film to improve performance of current 5G (and future 6G) networks. 

None of this news is surprising for a company Brenden Rearick of speaks this highly of: "[Meta Materials'] aggressive M&A strategy, above all else, serves to create stepping stones toward growing its increasingly popular business. And news of its most recent merger is making investors quite optimistic today," Rearick proclaimed last Wednesday.

META has also recently formed a scientific advisory board to help the company develop new technologies and to assist in outreach to the scientific community. We’ll introduce you to the new board in a few moments.

But first, let’s take a look at some of META’s most recent nanotech products.

Breakthrough Products From Meta Materials

As a B2B provider to leading original-equipment manufacturers, META’s technology platform enables global brands to deliver breakthrough nanotechnology products in consumer electronics, 5G communications, health and wellness, aerospace, automotive, and clean energy.

“Other applications include using our materials to de-ice and de-fog car and truck headlights, which is becoming more important as LED headlights, which don’t generate heat, are becoming the standard. We also can make antennas you can see through, as well as augmented reality devices that look like regular eyeglasses — and can actually be made with prescription lenses,” said Rob Stone, META’s Vice President of Corporate Development and Communications.

"We will be awarding grants in the categories of mobility and communications, imaging and display, energy and environment, healthcare, aerospace and defense, and Way Beyond Tech.”

In a deal that is expected to close in October, META is acquiring a Canadian company that has the manufacturing capacity to make nano-optic structures on thin films at high volume, Stone said. “They have about 47 patents that will be added to ours and an electron-beam lithography machine that will enable us to expand our penetration in markets we already serve.”

"We are at a critical inflection point in the commercialization of metamaterial science and technology," said Themos Kallos, chief science officer of META. "We are witnessing the convergence of scientific disciplines hastening opportunities to affect sustainability at scale, increase access to health care, decrease our dependance on rare earth and scarce materials as well as improve health outcomes around the world."

META’s recently launched Ideas for Innovation initiative supports the goal of not just maintaining manufacturing, but also of accelerating metamaterial product breakthroughs. To that end, they will be awarding grants in the categories of mobility and communications, imaging and display, energy and environment, healthcare, aerospace and defense, and “Way Beyond Tech.” The award winners will be announced by late January 2022 and are sure to yield more breakthrough technologies.

An Award-Winning Team at the Helm

As we alluded earlier, META recently announced the appointment of new leaders to their executive team. 

Andrea Alu, Ph.D., founding director of the Photonics Initiative at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, Einstein Professor of Physics at the CUNY Graduate Center, and Professor of Electrical Engineering at The City College of New York. He also a Senior Research Scientist and Adjunct Professor in the Wireless Networking and Communications Group at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests include applied electromagnetics, nano-optics and nanophotonics, among many areas.

Mark Brongersma, Ph.D., the Stephen Harris Professor of Materials Science and Applied Physics at Stanford University. His current research is directed toward the development and physical analysis of nanostructured materials that find application in nanoscale optoelectronic devices.

Nader Engheta, Ph.D., the H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, with affiliations in the Departments of Electrical and Systems Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, Bioengineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. His current research activities span a broad range of areas including metamaterials, photonics, electrodynamics, microwaves and nano-optics.

The Evolution of Meta Materials

Founded in 2011, META began as a software and design developer and later moved into manufacturing. In 2020, it did a reverse takeover of a Nasdaq company.

META currently holds 149 patents in areas related to its three core capabilities: holography, rolling mass lithography, and wireless sensing. It delivers previously unachievable performance, across a range of applications, by inventing, designing, developing, and manufacturing sustainable, highly functional materials.

“The types of products that our materials and processes can make possible represent breakthroughs, not incremental change,” says Stone.

“Using our materials in the area of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), for example, increases the signal-to-noise ratio almost forty-fold, enabling physicians to see things that previously had been a blur — or to see what they see now in a small fraction of the time needed by current techniques,” he said.
