Aurania Resources hypothesizes that the Colonial Spanish explored for and maybe even mined silver in the area of Lost Cities–Cutucu's Tiria-Shimpia target.

In a news release, Aurania Resources Ltd. (ARU:TSX.V; AUIAF:OTCQB) announced that further study of two roads and nearby topographic features, close to its Lost Cities–Cutucu project's Tiria-Shimpia, suggests they may be ancient exploration or mining infrastructure. Tiria-Shimpia is developing into one of the larger mineralized areas at the Ecuador property and, thus, is a key target for the company.

"We've been intrigued by the accumulation of evidence that Tiria-Shimpia may have been investigated for silver by the Colonial Spanish," Aurania Chairman and CEO Dr. Keith Barron said in the release.

Additional investigation of what is believed to be a road on the east side of the Tiria-Shimpia target lends credence to the thought that it was man made. Specifically, the ridge crest appears to have been intentionally flattened. Minimal erosion of the road bed, as wide as 100 meters in some places, suggests a purposeful drainage design there. The diameter of many of the trees growing from the road surface, as large as 1 meter, indicates they are quite old.

As for what is interpreted as a second road, it is located on the west side of Tiria-Shimpia, and runs along the ridge crest. The soil in and around that crest is enriched with silver, lead, zinc and epithermal pathfinder elements, including antimony, the company noted.

Both of the roads lie in an area where Aurania has discovered high-grade silver-zinc-lead mineralization.

Aurania suspects some of the topographic features near both roads are either prospecting pits, small-scale open mining pits or a combination.

"Our investigations of these peculiar landforms in the Tiria-Shimpia area are ongoing, and our findings will be reported as new information comes to light," Barron added.

The company reported that it continues to explore the 15 km by 5 km Tiria-Shimpia area, flying mobile MT geophysics in the northern part of the target, preparing to conduct scout drilling in areas where silver mineralization has been found in outcrops, mapping other parts of the system and conducting soil sampling.
