Aurania Resources Ltd. (ARU:TSX.V; AUIAF:OTCQB) announced in a news release that it encountered high-grade copper and silver over an extensive area at the Kirus target at its Lost Cities–Cutucu project in Ecuador. Kirus is 6 kilometers to the south of Tsenken, which the company has been exploring in depth.
I'm delighted to report that sedimentary-hosted copper and silver have been encountered over an extensive area [at Kirus]. At Tsenken, one large target area is resolving into specific targets that will be drill-tested shortly; in the same way, we expect that ongoing work at Kirus will lead to the definition of specific targets to be tested by scout drilling," Chairman and CEO Dr. Keith Barron said in the release.
Since April, the Toronto-based explorer doubled the size of the area of mineralization at Kirus through sampling of boulders and outcrop. It also stated that it discovered that similar to the other sediment-hosted copper-silver targets identified at Lost Cities–Cutucu, the primary copper-bearing minerals in the sedimentary layers at Kirus are malachite, chrysocolla, tenorite and chalcocite.
The Kirus samples that recently returned high grade mineralization were taken from an area next to the 5 kilometer diameter magnetic feature that captured Aurania's attention, the company reported. Because the magnetic center is a target for copper porphyries, the company is currently collecting soil samples at Kirus to identify areas of copper enrichment that could indicate that underlying porphyry mineralization exists there.
