Defense Metals aims to evaluate potential mine effects on surface water quantity.

Defense Metals Corp. (DEFN:TSX.V; DFMTF:OTCQB; 35D:FSE) announced in a news release that a baseline surface water quality assessment is underway at its Wicheeda rare earth elements (REEs) project in British Columbia.

"With the initiation of this multiyear program of baseline surface water hydrology and water quality assessment, we continue to be forward looking with respect to advancement of the Wicheeda REEs project," Defense Metals President and CEO Craig Taylor said in the release.

The aim of this work, being done by Environmental Dynamics Inc. (EDI), is to evaluate potential mine effects on surface water quantity. For this purpose, eight places on the 1,708 hectare Wicheeda property were selected as possible sites for a hydrometric station that would continuously monitor and log the water level. Discharge data from these sites will be collected over two years to determine a baseline. Water quality measurements and sampling will be done as well.

Already, the company noted that EDI collected samples from seven stream and lake sites around Wicheeda, results for which are pending. It measured manual stream flow from spring snow thawing at five locations, and it assessed the proposed station sites.
