Patriot One Technologies and its partners have created a model that automatically calculates, from a radiological scan, the degree of a patient's affected lungs, a COVID-19 indicator.

Patriot One Technologies Inc. (PAT:TSX; PTOTF:OTCQX) announced in a news release that its subsidiary Xtract Technologies is working collaboratively with partners on developing a way to help radiologists quickly diagnose patients with COVID-19 and catch it early on, based on their CT scans and X-rays.

A major indicator of COVID-19 is the percentage of lung volume that appears as a ground glass opacity on radiological images. Thus, Xtract AI and its partners, including Amazon Web Services, Vancouver General Hospital, the University of British Columbia (UBC) and SapienML, devised an artificial Intelligence (AI)-based way to automatically assess the degree of ground glass opacity on chest CT scans and X-rays.

The parties created a model using scans taken worldwide that 14 volunteer radiologists labeled as being in one of three categories: normal lung, background or ground glass opacity. Using the images, the development team trained three-dimensional residual networks, an AI algorithm, to automatically identify on a scan the ground glass opacity volume of the lungs, compare it to the total volume of the lungs and calculates the ratio of affected to unaffected lungs.

Because the team aims to achieve a greater than 90% diagnostic accuracy with its solution, it will continue to improve its model by incorporating new data as it gets them.

In the meantime, the collaborators made its existing model publicly available under an open source license so that healthcare facilities around the world may use it.

"The goal of our AI model is to drive feedback so that we can improve the model and make it available for clinical use in the fall of 2020," Dr. William Parker, a radiology resident at UBC who is leading the project.

Martin Cronin, CEO of Patriot One Technologies, said "This is an incredibly important project, which we are proud to be a collaborator on, and we hope that our team and technology can provide a meaningful addition to the ongoing efforts to minimise COVID-19's impact on the world."
