This device, intended for use by law enforcement, reportedly operated consistently and without interference.

Cannabix Technologies Inc. (BLO:CSE; BLOZF:OTCMKTS) provided an update on its marijuana breathalyzer product in a recent news release. The device, currently in development, is intended for eventual use by law enforcement and employers.

The device uses FAIMS—field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry—to detect the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cannabix's engineers "developed a new atmospheric pressure chemical ionization source that provides significantly improved ion control in terms of intensity, stability and focusing," the release noted.

Recent testing of the breathalyzer on humans showed it consistently isolates THC in exhaled breath, disregarding other compounds typically found there, such as nicotine, onion, garlic, meats, ethanol, menthol and more, according to the announcement.

Testing was done in the presence of various other complex substances, like tomato juice, mouthwash and common electrolyte drinks high in salt and sugar, to see if adduct ions, which could interfere, would form. None did.

This characterization work is almost finished, according to the company. The next development phase will be third-party testing and piloting of the device.
