India's Nuclear Plants to Remain State Owned

"India has no plans to allow private companies to set up nuclear plants."

India has no plans to allow private sector companies to set up nuclear power plants, Prithviraj Chavan, minister of state for science & technology and earth sciences has said. This goes against a recommendation from the prime minister's economic advisory council, which said that private investment in the sector would help the power-starved economy to grow.

Chavan told the Rajya Sabha, India's upper house of parliament that the government doesn't intend to change the related provision of the Atomic Energy Act, 1962 for private participation in setting up nuclear power plants, at this stage. Currently, private companies can become involved in nuclear projects as minor partners in a government company.

In February, the government's economic advisory panel said that there was an 'urgent need' to make regulatory changes so that investment in the nuclear power-generation business could begin to flow, including from established private companies.
