The liquor also offers a 24-karat gold label on a handmade Italian crystal bottle.
The high-end liquor will be marketed in Mexico, beginning in April, and will later be exported to the U.S. and Europe.
The company Vinos y Licores Azteca is banking on the European fondness for edible gold. The Egyptians and Chinese apparently used gold in their food, and is now used in some European products, Los Vinos y Licores CEO Melly Barajas said. The Japanese have been adding edible gold to foods and sake for centuries.
Alchemists of the 15th Century used gold medicinally. Barajas claims her gold-laced tequila has medicinal properties including acting as an antioxidant.
"Whoever buys this bottle is acquiring a fine drink as well as an innovative, glamorous product," she said.
The company claims the production of the tequila is backed by certificates of quality from both the U.S. and the European Union. The first shipment will be comprised of 5,000 bottles to be distributed mainly in Mexico and partially to Belgium, Britain, Canada, other parts of Europe, and the U.S.
